SUBJECT: May 2025 Hexter Newsletter

Hexter Hawks May 2025 Newsletter
Message from the President

Howdy Hawks!

Can't believe this is our LAST regular newsletter of the school year- this year has truly flown by. I am so thrilled that we have been able to provide this newsletter for our members this year, and hope that you all have found it useful.

What a busy couple of weeks we've had here at Hexter PTA! We just wrapped the WRHT, and am so proud of what we have accomplished. Thank you so much to our Chairperson, Chanda Rousseau, for your dedication and hard work these last 9 months. And of course, to the dedicated Committee who worked behind the scenes on our social media, securing donors and sponsors, and communicating with the public. A special shout out to everyone in our Hexter community who signed up to docent, liaison, break down tents, or run shoe coverings between homes this past weekend. There are too many individuals to thank here, but the response from our community was amazing- we love your love for Hexter!

As we roll into May, we've got a LOT to look forward to, and of course, plenty of volunteer opportunities for anyone looking for ways to get involved. From Field Day, to Science Night, to end of year parties... phew... you've got your pick!

Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week. Thank you in advance to Adrianne Graham, our Hospitality Chair, who has gone to great personal lengths to plan so many thoughful and exciting ways for us to shower our teachers and staff with love and appreciation. You ROCK!

Be sure you mark your calendars for May 15th. This is our last PTA Meeting of the year. At this meeting you will be introduced to our new Board, hear important updates about our budget for next year, and also reflect on everything we've done this year. Its not one to miss!

On a personal note, I wanted to take a brief moment to thank the people who have supported me the last two years as I have assumed this role. My children, and most importantly, my husband, Dave. You have been my sounding board, the primary parent on a lot of days, the runner of errands, the shopper of groceries (so many frozen pizzas!), the bedtime and bath-giver, and so much more. Thank you for picking up the slack when I couldn't be there and for being my support!

Elizabeth DuFlo

PTA President 2023-2024, 2024-2025

Congratulations to our Teacher of the Year, Miss Gilbert!

1- Where did you grow up and go to school?

I grew up here in Dallas and attended Hexter as a kid until third grade. Then we moved to Rowlett, and I completed school in Garland ISD. I studied agricultural business and animal science at Sul Ross State University and later attended the University of North Texas to study education.

2- How long have you worked at Hexter?

This is my 16th year at Hexter. I have taught kindergarten for 14 of those years but was originally hired part time to provide reading interventions for first and second grade students.

3- What does this recognition mean to you?

It's very nice to be recognized by your peers and a little overwhelming. I normally try to avoid attention, so this was a huge surprise to me.

4- What do you like to do outside the school?

I like to be outside as much as possible. I enjoy working in my yard, cooking/grilling and spending time with my family including my dog.

5- How would you describe your teaching philosophy?

I really try to make learning fun for my students while getting them ready for first grade at the same time. I want my students to enjoy their time in class so that they develop a love of learning. I try to make sure they know I care about them while also setting clear expectations for both academics and behavior.

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

We need more volunteers to help kick off this year Perot x Hexter Science Night on 5/14.  The Perot team will be on site but we need to cover a few stations.  Here is the signup link.

Volunteer of the Month

Our Hexter VOM is Emma Jamail.  Throughout this school year, Emma has given time to Hexter PTA events as well as on campus volunteering programs.  Emma, you deserve a Hexter Hawk shout out! Here is a little Q&A with Emma:

1) You dedicate your personal time to volunteering at Hexter, why? - I grew up with a single mom who was never once able to volunteer at my school, due to working multiple jobs. I consider it an honor, and am very aware that it’s a privilege to have the flexibility to volunteer. It brings me immense joy to see my daughter’s (or another child’s) smiling face when I show up to the school for volunteering!

2) Was there a volunteering moment that made you smile this year? - I have recently been involved in the Hexter Reads Initiative, started by my wonderful friend Karen Salerno. When I went to pick up one of my students for our reading session a few weeks ago, the student was visibly excited to see me and to come to the session (and was equally disappointed when I said we were taking a pause from sessions during STAAR testing), and that just really warmed my heart!

3) Any hobbies? Motto or quote to live by? - I work part time as a nurse and my other days are spent with my 2.5-year-old future Hexter Hawk, so I wouldn’t say I have any true hobbies in this season of life. But I do have passions! I am passionate about equality, particularly rights of marginalized groups. I feel very strongly about LGBTQ+ rights, rights to autonomy in healthcare, immigrant rights, and the rights and treatment of people of all origins and races. I pity (and fear) anyone who doesn’t understand how beautiful and important a diverse community and world is!

4) Interesting facts about yourself? - I was born on Friday the 13th, and I love when my birthday falls on a Friday again (like it will this year!) My wife also proposed to me on a Friday the 13th, because she knows that I think they’re special days. I make a point to convince people that it’s a lucky day, instead of unlucky!

Teacher Appreciation Week May 5-9

Get ready as Teacher Appreciation Week is hapening next week! We have worked hard to fill their week with all the things to show how much we love and appreciate our Hexter Teachers and Staff.

One of those days will be a Backyard BBQ potluck with sliders provided by our amazing One90 Smoked Meats family.  We will need some delicious sides to go with the sliders so please check the signup below if you would like to participate in the potluck.

Potluck Signup

We also thought up some ways the students could participate for little to no cost!  You can choose just one day or choose to do all five.  It's up to each student.  Either way, it will be appreciated!

As always, please reach out with any questions (hexterhawkptahospitality@gmail.com).
