1- Where did you grow up and go to school? Â
I grew up as the daughter of an Air Force sergeant, so I moved frequently throughout my childhood. I began school in Wiesbaden, Germany, where I attended 1st and 2nd grade.
We then moved to Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska, where I attended Fort Crook Elementary from 3rd through 6th grade.
After that, we returned to Germany, and I attended Hahn American High School for 7th and 8th grade. The summer before my freshman year, we moved to Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento, California. I attended Mitchell Junior High for 9th grade and later graduated from Folsom High School.
2- How long have you worked at Hexter?Â
I began teaching at Hexter in August 2008.Â
3- What does this recognition mean to you?
Being chosen as Hexterâs Teacher of the Year is especially meaningful because it comes from my peers. I work alongside some of the most dedicated and passionate educators in the district, so being recognized by them is a true honor. I am deeply grateful.Â
4- What do you like to do outside the school?
Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with friends, reading a good book, and binge-watching TV shows.Â
5- How would you describe your teaching philosophy?
I strive to create a classroom that is student-centered, hands-on, and inquiry-based. My goal is for students to make meaningful connections and develop their own understanding of scientific concepts.
Rather than simply telling students that a mixture is a combination of two or more substances, we explore this concept through hands-on experiences. For example, we create and separate mixtures in class, allowing students to build their understanding based on what happens when ingredients like raisins, Chex cereal, and M&Ms are combined.
Through experiences like these, I hope students leave my classroom with curiosity, confidence, and a lasting understanding of science that extends beyond the classroom.
